The Necessary Evil

So often, geotechnical engineers are looked at as a necessary evil, or to just get sufficient information to pad a file. In reality, our goal is actually to save project costs. We encourage face time frequently to enhance the relationship between our firm and the balance of the design team.  Most geotechnical engineers that I know would embrace more meetings to ensure that everyone is on the same page. We all have gotten too sucked in to the email transmission of vital information, which has a purpose, but cannot be the end game.  We need to gravitate back to old school in terms of interpersonal communication.
